What a kitchen remodel covers

Every kitchen project is some mix of the same building blocks — your consultation is about deciding which ones are worth it in your house:

  • Layout — opening or moving walls, relocating the sink or range, adding an island. The most expensive block, and the one that changes daily life most.
  • Cabinetry — stock, semi-custom, or custom. Typically the single largest line item, 25–35% of the budget.
  • Counters and backsplash — quartz and granite lead; the fabrication template happens after cabinets are set.
  • Appliances, plumbing, and fixtures — including gas or electrical upgrades where the new range or oven needs them.
  • Electrical and lighting — code-required circuits, under-cabinet lighting, recessed cans in place of the old single ceiling box.
  • Floors, paint, and trim — usually last in, first admired.

Where the money actually goes

The honest answer to “why do quotes vary so much?” is scope. Keeping the sink, range, and walls where they are saves real money — plumbing and structural moves are what push a $60,000 kitchen to $100,000. Cabinet grade is the second driver, and appliance selection is the third. A good contractor prices all three ways and lets you choose; that’s exactly what the free consultation is for.

Good to know

Kitchen Remodeling: common questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

Nationally, most kitchen remodels land between $25,000 and $150,000+. A refresh that keeps the existing layout — new cabinet fronts, counters, backsplash, and appliances — usually sits at the lower end. A full remodel with new cabinetry and finishes typically runs $50,000–$90,000, and projects that move walls or plumbing, or use custom cabinetry, go beyond that. Your consultation ends with a written estimate based on your actual kitchen, not a national average.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Plan on 6–12 weeks of construction for a full remodel, after a design and ordering phase of 4–8 weeks (cabinets are usually the longest lead time). A cosmetic update can be done in 2–4 weeks. Your contractor will give you a written schedule before work starts.

Can I live in my house during the remodel?

Almost everyone does. Expect the kitchen itself to be out of service for the construction window — most families set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, coffee maker, and fridge in another room. Your contractor will seal off the work area and agree on working hours with you.

Do I need permits to remodel a kitchen?

If the project touches plumbing, gas, electrical, or walls — yes, in nearly every US jurisdiction. Cosmetic swaps like counters and cabinet fronts usually don't require one. The licensed contractor you're matched with handles permit filings and inspections as part of the job; it's a standard line item, not your homework.

Do I need my own designer or architect?

Usually not. Most remodeling contractors offer design-build: they measure, propose layouts and materials, and produce the drawings the permit office needs. If you already have an architect's plans, great — your contractor will bid from them.

Who actually does the work?
